Brockman 4 Operations is located on the lands of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura and Muntulgura Guruma Peoples in the Western Pilbara, approximately 60 kilometres from Tom Price. Operations began in 2010 for the Brockman 4 deposit.
We’re extending the life of our Brockman hub, by developing the Brockman Syncline 1 mine project. Brockman Syncline will have the capacity to process up to 34 million tonnes per annum of iron ore, leveraging our existing plants. Construction has started, with first ore expected in 2027.
With a fly-in fly-out workforce of around 900, our team commutes from Perth, Geraldton, Albany and Busselton.
We operate ~60 autonomous haul trucks at Brockman that are all monitored remotely from our Operations Centre in Perth, which is 1,500 kilometres away. Our AutoHaul™ rail network is the world’s first fully autonomous heavy‑haul rail system. Our operations are paperless, with every team member using a tablet to access real‑time information in the field. We also use drones and remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) to create real‑time 3D maps and carry out equipment inspections, as well as to check slopes, crests and walls for safety risks such as cracks or signs of rock movement.
Our Brockman operations are located on the lands of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) Peoples and the Muntulgura Guruma People, and we work closely with Traditional Owners to protect culture and Country. In 2025, PKKP and Rio Tinto signed a Co‑Management Agreement that sets out how we make decisions together across the mine lifecycle, ensuring significant heritage is preserved while providing certainty about where responsible development can occur. Community engagement is also a core part of how the Brockman 4 team operates, especially through our sponsor town, Albany. Each year, our leaders spend time in the region supporting local organisations and listening to community needs. This has included volunteering with groups such as the Salvation Army, Clontarf Academy and local conservation programs.
