Experience

Matthew was appointed Chief Executive, Iron Ore in August 2025.

He joined Rio Tinto in 2007 and brings more than 20 years’ mining industry experience across operations, major projects, business development and commercial roles. Matthew has worked across iron ore, copper and nickel operations in Australia, Asia, South America and the UK. He was most recently Managing Director, Pilbara Mines, leading Rio Tinto’s 18 iron ore operations in Western Australia.

Matthew is known for delivering strong performance through systems thinking, talent development and an empowered, collaborative culture.

• Extensive global leadership of Tier 1 mining assets, with direct accountability for integrating large-scale, cross-border iron ore production, infrastructure and development portfolios.
• Multi-commodity operational and commercial acumen, drawing on over 2 decades of international experience managing extraction, processing and project lifecycles across diverse regulatory environments.
• Deep expertise in system-led performance optimisation, utilising advanced operational integration frameworks to enhance safety standards, capital productivity and community joint-venture relationships.
