Experience

Mark was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2020 and leads Safety, Development & Technical. He brings extensive international operational and technical experience gained over 3 decades across Australia, the US, UK and Singapore.

As Chief Safety & Technical Officer, Mark is accountable for Group-wide standards and assurance, covering safety, technical, and communities and social performance. In this role, Mark is also accountable for exploration and major capital projects. His portfolio encompasses the Group's operations improvement and innovation mandates to maximise asset productivity, while overseeing the mitigation of safety, technical and community risks and managing closure legacy sites.

Mark joined Rio Tinto in 1995 as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and has worked in operational and functional leadership roles, including Iron and Titanium, Group Risk and Global Procurement.

  • Extensive experience in technical risk mitigation and operational excellence, with direct accountability for Group-wide safety, technical and environmental standards and assurance, major capital project delivery and international exploration portfolios to identify and progress future growth opportunities and develop the next generation of world-class mining assets.
  • Proven capability leading international multidisciplinary teams across exploration, project development, technical services, operations, global safety, decarbonisation and innovation as well as leading technological advancement across the Group's active and legacy asset footprints.
  • Deep experience integrating technology, digital capability and artificial intelligence into exploration, project development and operations to improve decision-making, accelerate project delivery and enhance asset performance.
  • Significant experience in global commercial, risk and procurement roles and a deep understanding of Rio Tinto’s operational risk and opportunities to drive value creation through technology and innovation.
