How we hire

We operate around the world, across many cultures, timezones and environments. Learn more about how we recruit and select people to join our team.

Recruitment at Rio Tinto can differ per site and role, but most recruitment processes follow a similar xx step approach.

1. Find a role

Your journey with Rio Tinto starts with our website. All available positions are advertised on our website. Once you find a suitable position that you are qualified to do, follow the links to apply for the job. You will be required to create an account to complete the application. Remember to use your resume and any supporting materials to sell why you will be the right candidate for the role. We don’t advertise salaries but if you are successful in progressing, the salary range is something you can ask the hiring manager during the interview.

2. Reviewing your application

Our recruitment team and/or the hiring manager will review your application. Depending on the role, there may be different ways we select candidates to move to the next stage. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we can not provide individual feedback if you do not progress to the next stage.

3. Pre-screening

If you are shortlisted for the role, you will receive an email to complete a series of online tests. These tests are tailored for the role you have applied for. For example, for an office-based job you may be asked to complete a psychometric test or for a site-based role you may need to [insert information]. The hiring manger will use the results from these tests to determine who proceeds to the interview stage.

4. Hiring manager interview

A member of our recruitment team will be in touch with you to organise a time for an interview. Due the nature of some of our roles, these interviews may be in-person or via Microsoft teams. Most interviews are performed with a panel of up to 3 people. During the interview, you need to be prepared to demonstrate how your skills meet the requirements of the role. See the tips section at the bottom of this page for more information.

5. Final interview

For some roles, a second-round interview may be requested for short-listed applicants.

6. Offer

If you are the successful candidate, our recruitment team will send you an email with your written offer for you to sign. This process can take a few weeks between your interview and when the offer is drawn up, so be patient. For all roles, your acceptance is conditional on passing a medical test. For office-based roles this could include a drug and alcohol test. For site-based roles, this could be a full medical. Our third-party provider will be in touch with you directly to organise a time to complete this test.

7. Onboarding

On acceptance of the offer, the recruitment team or hiring manager will be in touch to discuss a start date and discuss any activities you may need to complete ahead of this time, like building access, payroll paperwork, site inductions and travel arrangements.
