Asia is the hub for a lot of our commercial and supporting functions. Our Singapore office, in the heart of the central business district, is home to our commercial headquarters. India is home to our team of passionate support teams including HR, finance, health and safety and others.
By 2030, our Oyu Tolgoi operation in Mongolia’s South Gobi Desert is expected to be the world’s fourth-largest copper mine. We currently have 4,700 employees working at our Oyu Tolgoi site.
Our Canadian operations go back to the early 1900s when we operated as Alcan. Today, we have nearly 14,000 employees working across a number of sites and in corporate roles. In Canada, we mine and produce a variety of materials from diamonds to aluminium.
Our first mines, when we formed as a company more than 150 years ago, were along the banks of the Rio Tinto river in Andalusia, Spain. Today, our global headquarters are in London and we have operations (like Iceland and Serbia) and legacy sites (like France and Sweden) across Europe.
From Weipa at the northern tip of Queensland and Gove in the Northern Territory, to the vast landscapes of Western Australia, Australia is home to almost half of our global business and employees. It’s here we produce iron ore, salt, bauxite, alumina and aluminium. Outside of roles at our 35 sites in Australia, we also have a range of corporate roles based in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane. We also have a research hub in Melbourne.
In New Zealand, our New Zealand Aluminium Smelter converts alumina into aluminium using renewable hydroelectricity, resulting in one of the lowest carbon footprints for an aluminium smelter in the world.
